The Transformation
The Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation is the largest cultural infrastructure project in Australia’s history.
The Victorian Government is investing $1.7 billion to transform the precinct into one of the greatest creative and cultural destinations in the world.
By 2028 the transformation will deliver:
-
11,000 jobs over the life of the build.
-
The Fox: NGV Contemporary.
-
Significant upgrades to Arts Centre Melbourne’s heritage Theatres Building.
-
An expansive 18,000sqm public urban garden.
-
Underground shared services infrastructure and vital technology upgrades.
The Fox: NGV Contemporary will be Australia’s largest gallery of contemporary art and design. An awe-inspiring and timeless design, The Fox will feature more than 13,000 square metres of dedicated display space, including exhibition galleries and an expansive rooftop terrace and sculpture garden with stunning views of the surrounding public gardens and Melbourne’s skyline.
Arts Centre Melbourne will undergo significant upgrades including works to modernise the Theatres Building and a major renewal of the heritage State Theatre. The transformation will deliver technology upgrades as well as targeted critical maintenance works to the buildings’ uniquely engineered foundation and basement structure.
Expansive urban garden. The transformation will deliver 18,000 square metres of new public spaces, featuring restaurants, bars, lush green spaces, and public art. The parklands will connect NGV: International, The Fox: NGV Contemporary, and Arts Centre Melbourne in an immersive cultural experience that will cement Melbourne Art Precincts’ reputation as one of the finest cultural destinations in the world.
Seamless and sustainable. The Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation will deliver an integrated network of underground shared services infrastructure to support the precinct, ensuring seamless and sustainable operations, and taking the precinct into the 21st century.
