The Victorian Government project will bring to life a single continuous artistic, civic, and cultural precinct stretching from Federation Square to Southbank.

The transformation will deliver:

  • The Fox: NGV Contemporary, a new gallery dedicated to contemporary art and design.
  • Significant upgrades to Arts Centre Melbourne’s heritage Theatres Building.
  • An expansive 18,000sqm biodiverse public urban garden.
  • Underground shared services infrastructure and vital technology upgrades.

This major project will also create more than 11,000 jobs during construction and more ongoing local jobs once complete.

Development Victoria is delivering the transformation of the Melbourne Arts Precinct, Australia’s largest cultural infrastructure project, on behalf of the Victorian Government through Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation (MAP Co), in partnership with Arts Centre Melbourne, National Gallery of Victoria and Creative Victoria.

The Fox: NGV Contemporary

The Fox: NGV Contemporary will be the largest gallery dedicated to contemporary art and design in Australia, displaying internationally significant works of art and exhibitions. The new gallery will boost opportunities for Victorian artists and designers and will be an artistically significant global landmark drawing even more international visitors into the Melbourne Arts Precinct.

Arts Centre Melbourne Upgrades

For the first time since it opened in 1984, Arts Centre Melbourne’s Theatres Building will undergo significant upgrades including refurbishment of the heritage listed State Theatre, and improved accessibility and amenity for performers and staff.

Works in the State Theatre will bring this cultural icon into the 21st century with upgrades to technology, back-of-house facilities, and accessibility – improving the theatre experience and comfort for patrons.
