Construction works on the Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation are continuing, with structures going up and coming down marking key milestones across the project.
Construction of the elevated deck in the Kavanagh St/Sturt St intersection has wrapped up, with the deck, civil ground slabs and concrete columns now in place.
This completed structure forms a new covered entrance to the Arts Centre Melbourne Car Park.
It is the first section of the deck that will support the 18,000sqm urban garden, the new back-of-house facilities for Arts Centre Melbourne, and improved shared services for Arts Centre Melbourne, NGV International and The Fox: NGV Contemporary.
From vantage points around the site, it’s possible to envision how the future garden will connect the cultural institutions in the precinct and improve access between St Kilda Rd, Southbank, Sturt St, and beyond.
While construction continues, Arts Centre Melbourne’s Car Park can be accessed via both Kavanagh St and Southbank Boulevard. The Australian Ballet car park remains open and accessible through Kavanagh St.
At 77 Southbank Boulevard, deconstruction of the former CUB building is progressing to make way for the new gallery, The Fox: NGV Contemporary. Following the deconstruction of above-ground levels, the works will shift to focus on the removal of the basement structure.
To help locals and visitors alike navigate the precinct, there’s a new Getting around Southbank Village map.
Printed copies of the map will be available at local shops, and a digital version can be downloaded below.
