Laak Boorndap will be a new 18,000sqm expansive urban garden, wrapping around Arts Centre Melbourne, NGV International and The Fox: NGV Contemporary. It will improve pedestrian connectivity and accessibility through the Melbourne Arts Precinct from Princes Bridge to Southbank Boulevard and Sturt Street, allowing for more patrons to navigate through the precinct.
To allow for works on Laak Boorndap to begin, hoarding has been erected around areas near Arts Centre Melbourne and NGV International, including the area between Arts Centre Melbourne's Hamer Hall and Theatres Building around the sculpture, Forward Surge.
Part of this package of works involve the removal of the St Kilda Road Canopy between Theatres Building and Hamer Hall. Our contractors will be undertaking out‑of‑hours work from Monday 16 March - Monday 23 March between 11:00pm and 6:00am including on weekends to remove the canopy.
During this time, pedestrians will be diverted around this section of St Kilda Road. You can expect general construction noise; increased truck activity; temporary removal of car parks; and increased presence of construction workers in this area while we work to remove the canopy.
We understand the canopy provided some shelter during poor weather for visitors travelling between the Theatres Building and Hamer Hall. However, to protect the sightlines of Inge King’s sculpture, Forward Surge, and its relationship with Hamer Hall and the Theatres Building, it will not be reinstated.
Laak Boorndap will be a stunning new public space for visitors, workers and residents to move through or to dwell, to gather together, relax and enjoy.
