In our ongoing profile series of the people who make up our arts precinct, we chat to Chris Russell, Director and Chief Executive of Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, about live music, Lightscape and leadership.
What attracted to you to the role at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria?
The Gardens combines a strong purpose, being to champion the role of plants for the wellbeing of people and the planet, with a sense of wonder for the natural world. That combination absolutely pushes my buttons.
What is your leadership style?
I am a firm believer in the importance of developing meaningful relationships with your people, in an authentic way. Feeling heard and valued brings out the best in everyone, regardless of your role in an organisation.
What was the last show you saw that rocked your world?
Sarah Blasko and Boy & Bear was a beautiful night I enjoyed earlier in the year as part of our Live at the Gardens concert series. Seeing thousands of people enjoying quality live music in a beautiful garden setting is an amazing thing.
What are you most looking forward to seeing?
Lightscape, our much-loved illuminated light experience will return from 20 June 2025, featuring more than 20 stunning new installations. Transforming the botanic gardens into a wonderland after dark is incredible and provides a whole new way of experiencing the plants and the landscape. This year I am looking forward to seeing the 'Effervescence’ (I’ve heard it’s breathtaking) and experiencing the immersive soundscape. Oh, and not to forget the mulled wine, hot chocolate and delicious treats.
Lightscape runs from Friday, 20 June until Sunday, 10 August 2025. You can book tickets online now.
What’s on the horizon at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria that we should keep our eyes out for?
Live at the Gardens is returning in November for another star-studded series of performances, on the green and under the stars!
